Why see a pelvic health physio?

What is included in a pelvic health assessment?

Pelvic floor dysfunction is very common but should not be normalised. 1 in 3 women will experience symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction. It is treatable and I'm here to help you start that journey whenever you are ready.

Pelvic floor dysfunction can present in many different ways but some common symptoms include:

• Leaking with a cough/sneeze or when lifting, jumping, running etc
• Leaking before you arrive at the loo
• Urgency to get to the loo or needing to visit frequently
• Pain during sex
• Difficulty or pain on inserting a tampon
• A feeling of heaviness, bulging or dragging from the vagina
• Abdominal or back pain

Our pelvic health assessment will start with discussion about your symptoms and how they behave day to day; your lifestyle; your medical health and gynaecological history and bladder and bowel habits. We will then move onto an internal examination of the pelvic floor (of course this step is optional), before reviewing functional movements like squatting, lunging, jumping and the strength of the surrounding musculature. Every body is different and so this assessment will absolutely be tailored to your individual presentation.

Following your assessment, you will receive practical advice to help manage any symptoms, along with exercises personalised to you. There are also other techniques that may help your recovery such as manual therapy, relaxation and acupuncture. These will be included in your plan if applicable.

If you are navigating perimenopause and would like help with injury, starting resistance-based exercise or advice, please select Pelvic Health Physiotherapy at booking. This will allow me time to fully understand your needs, assess your body's current function and devise your bespoke treatment plan.

Pelvic health assessment is also beneficial before and after gynaecological surgery, please reach out if you would like more information.
